How I became a copywriter...

I’d hate to bore you with another cliché story about the young entrepreneur who started hustling way back in 5th grade, selling candy and basketball cards to his classmates at lunch…

Well I apologize in advance, because this is another one of those stories.

As far back as I can remember, I was doing everything I could to earn an extra penny. Whether it was selling sticks of bubble gum for 25 cents in 5th grade, mowing the neighbor’s lawn, or washing windows for local homeowners, I was all in if I could be my own boss and make a few extra bucks.

You may be asking what any of this has to do with copywriting

Well, I never realized it at the time, but the only reason I was able to succeed at my side hustles is because I had a natural ability to sell myself and my services. As a constant observer of human behavior at an unusually young age, I always knew what words built trust, struck the emotional trigger, and ultimately made people take action.

Yes, even selling sticks of bubble gum to other 5th graders, I always emphasized that I exclusively sold the gum with the longest lasting flavor for the low price of 25 cents (not bad when each pack was only 25 cents, creating an impressive gross margin of 80% for my little grade school empire).

To land nearby mowing jobs, I would emphasize the importance of my close vicinity and strong work ethic for someone so young.

This compelling usage of verbiage was further proven in my high school years when I received an interview and offer for nearly every job application that I submitted. This was solely due to my detailed cover letters and thoughtful answers to every application question…the kind of answers that happened to be the exact responses that the hiring managers wanted to hear from experienced professionals, let alone a teenager with very little work history.

A few years later, after starting and quickly growing a six-figure company at age 21, I was convinced that I had a unique gift for marketing, particularly putting together powerful words that build trust and drive action.

I knew that there had to be many other brands and experts out there that needed better copy for their marketing materials, so I started searching around and quickly realized that I had found my dream “job”.

I realized that copywriting was something that I could do all day, every day, and love every second of it. I could make a living at this. Not only doing something that I love and am extremely passionate about, but something that I had already been doing exceptionally well for years…

I’m a firm believer that we were all born to do one thing exceptionally well…and I’m very grateful to have found mine in copywriting.

During one of the worst economic downturns in history, I founded The Cleaning Solution with only $500 to my name. I quickly grew the company into a six figure recurring revenue business, largely due to compelling copywriting and strategic marketing.
